National Volunteer WeekApril 15 – April 21 April 15th through the 21st is National Volunteer Week and we would like to take this opportunity to thank some of our most valuable community assets – our volunteers - and recognize the myriad of ways they improve our community. Sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network, National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the Week as an annual celebration of volunteering. Every President since has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week. Nationwide, 26.7 per cent of the U. S. population, roughly 61.2 million people, volunteered in 2006 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many of our local civic, social, recreational, and charitable organizations continue a prominent and successful existence in our community primarily due to the commitment and dedication of volunteers. Volunteers reflect the power to “inspire by example” and encourage those they help and motivate others to serve. These volunteers provide the depth and breadth to our community creating purpose and sustainability. It is through their tireless efforts and unselfish giving that brings to mind the words of Winston Churchill, “We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.”
